Boots and Breeches
Page 9
As I mentioned on a previous page, breeches require a boot of proper height. In my case (I am 5'10"), I need a boot about 17 - 20 inches high. Anything shorter looks funny, and if the boot is over 20-inches tall I cannot bend my knee comfortably. Here are a few boots that I wear constantly.Top row, L-R: 18-inch Wesco Boss engineer boot, 20-inch Wesco Boss engineer boot, 18-inch Wesco Jobmaster lace-up. Bottom row, L-R: 18-inch Dehner Bal-laced Patrol boot, 18-inch Dehner dress boot, 17-inch Chippewa steel toe engineer boot.
At one time, many men wore brown boots, and I like that look. Here are four pairs that I wear frequently. Top row, L-R: 18-inch Frye campus boot, 17-inch Frye lace-up boot. Bottom row, L-R: A 17-inch field boot (unlabeled) that I bought at a flea market in Helsinki, a 17-inch Frye boot with a wrap-around ankle-instep strap. I purchased all these brown boots in the 1970s.
This is a closeup of my oldest pair of boots. My winter "gum rubbers" that I purchased on November 1, 1951, in North Fryeburg, Maine. They cost $7.00 and are still in service! Don't ask me how I remember trivia like tiis, I just DO!
